Challenge #9: Discuss Your Favorite Tropes

There's a lot of tropes I love to read/watch/write. One of my favorites is Slice of Life.

I adore watching my favorite characters live an ordinary life. I like seeing them have a meal, go shopping, hang out. Their simple joy brings me immense joy. 😍 I love it when I get to see these moments in canon and in fanfiction, between friends and between my ships.

It's a really fun, easy, and relaxing trope for me to write about. It also helps that it can encompass various other cutesy plots and tropes like Curtain Fic, Fluff, School AUs...

And it's especially satisfying to see/read/write when the canon is normally full of action, because dipping into slice of life feels like a reward for all the hard work everyone had to go through. Job well done, team, now go get some ice cream!

Screenshot from Dragon Ball Super of Vegeta, Bulma, and Trunks at an ice cream parlor. Bulma and Trunks look impressed at Trunks' tall stack of ice cream scoops while Vegeta calmly looks the other way licking his pink ice cream cone.

Slice of life can be really fun to write. ::nods:: Especially since most of my fandoms are action heavy. Exploring slice of life can give a fuller picture of the characters and the setting outside of all the action and, when it's not touched on much in canon, can be really interesting to try and figure out. I'm with you on this one!

Slice of life my beloved!!! Love seeing characters and relationships get developed using it; it's always a treat!

It's so fun to be able to give characters a nice day, especially when they have a hard time in canon.

Slice of life really can be such a joy. I'm an angst hound and I love to put my faves through an emotional meat grinder, but you're so right that writing fic about them doing something ordinary feels like a reward for all the action (or angst). The struggle makes the quiet moments even sweeter.

When canon is full of action and drama, some slice of life shenanigans can be a welcome treat indeed. It's a good chance to let everything breathe-- and adds more weight to the heavier stuff besides!

Slice of life is one of the best ways to let characters have a neat adventure that doesn't fit the mold of their usual forms, or sometimes even to avoid having the adventure in the first place, if the plot is kind to them. It's a very useful thing to do, and sets up a nice breather situation before more action.
